A full recreation of the iconic Last of Us intro sequence, built entirely in Houdini.
Every organic growth and particle effect was simulated from scratch, then composited into the final cinematic cut.

Houdini Simulations
Each effect in the intro was simulated individually in Houdini before being composited together.
Below you can see every sim in isolation from the organic fungal growth to the atmospheric cloud and particle effects.

Earlier Version
Final v1 What Changed & Why
After finishing the first complete render, several issues became apparent that needed to be addressed
before the animation could be considered truly done.
Final v1 First Complete Render
Various simulation and rendering artifacts were identified and corrected including clipping issues,
timing inconsistencies, and minor visual glitches that broke the immersion of the sequence.
The most noticeable change was the camera move at the end of the sequence.
The original version featured a very fast, snappy camera pan that felt abrupt and out of character
with the slow, atmospheric tone of the rest of the animation.
The camera was reworked with a smoother, more deliberate motion that better complements the
organic growth and the overall cinematic feel of the Last of Us intro style.
